1. Who we are.
In short Happy Endings is run by Brown Paper Press LLC. Using it means you agree to these terms, our privacy policy and our community guidelines.
Happy Endings (the website at happyendin.gs and any apps we offer) is operated by Brown Paper Press LLC, a Washington limited liability company doing business as Happy Endings (“we”, “us”). These terms of service, together with our privacy policy, our community guidelines and our safety page, are an agreement between you and us. By creating an account, or by reading, writing or paying on Happy Endings, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, don’t use Happy Endings.
These terms contain an arbitration agreement and a class action waiver in section 23. Unless you opt out within 31 days, disputes between you and us will be resolved by individual arbitration, not in court.
2. Who can join.
In short Grown folk only, in the US, verified once with your ID and a live selfie. One account each.
To use Happy Endings you must:
- be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live if that is older;
- live in the United States and use Happy Endings from there;
- pass our identity and age check (section 3) and give us true information;
- never have been convicted of, or pleaded guilty or no contest to, a violent crime or a crime of a sexual nature, and not be required to register as a sex offender anywhere;
- not have been removed from Happy Endings before, unless we have told you in writing that you may come back;
- be able to form a binding contract and not be barred from using Happy Endings by any law.
You may hold one account. Accounts are personal: don’t share, sell or transfer yours, and don’t let anyone else use it. We may close any account we reasonably believe breaks these conditions. We may stop offering Happy Endings in any state or place if the law there changes or makes it impractical, and we will tell affected members first where we can.
3. Your account, your names and the ID check.
In short We check your ID and a live selfie once, through our verification partner. We keep that you’re verified, your age range and the selfie, never the ID. Your real name stays between you and us; others see your pen name or first name.
The check. Before you can share a draft, send a submission or chat, you must verify your identity and age through our identity verification partner, by scanning a government ID and taking a live selfie. Our partner compares the selfie with the photo on the ID. Separate consent is asked for this at the time, as described in our privacy policy and biometric data notice. We keep a record that you passed, your birth year, your age range and the live selfie. We never keep the ID, its photo or your date of birth. We may ask you to verify again if we have reason to doubt an account.
Your names. The first and last name on your account must match your ID. We never show your last name to other members. You may write under a pen name, or your real first name if you choose. A pen name is chosen once, when you sign up or later from your Dust jacket, and can’t be changed. A pen name may not impersonate a real person or another member, or suggest you are someone you’re not.
Keeping it safe. You’re responsible for what happens under your account and for keeping your sign-in secure. Tell us at once at if you think someone else has used it.
4. Your words are yours.
In short You own what you write. Until a tale is published, you only lend us the right to show it to the people it’s meant for, and you can take that back.
You keep the copyright in everything you write on Happy Endings: chapters, submissions, footnotes, messages and your profile (“your words”). We claim no ownership of them.
So that Happy Endings can work, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, format and display your words to the members you share them with, and to show the opening lines of a chapter one in Foreplay, for as long as they are on Happy Endings. This license ends for any of your words when you delete them or your account, except for published tales (section 6), copies we must keep by law or to resolve a report (as set out in our privacy policy) and backups that are overwritten in the normal course.
You promise that your words are your own original work, that you have the right to grant these licenses and that your words don’t break these terms or anyone else’s rights.
5. Writing together.
In short A tale is a duet. Each of you owns your own chapters, and each of you lets the other read, answer and build on them inside the tale.
Most tales on Happy Endings are written by two members (“co-authors”). Each co-author keeps the copyright in the chapters they wrote. When you share a chapter with another member, or send a submission to a chapter one, you grant that member a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to read your words, to write chapters that continue them and to quote them within the tale and your chats. Neither of you may take the other’s chapters out of Happy Endings, or publish them anywhere else, without the other’s written permission.
A submission becomes chapter two only when the author of chapter one accepts it. A chapter one can receive a limited number of submissions. A tale ends as a Happy ending or Kept on the bookshelf when its co-authors finish it, and an unpublished tale stays private to its co-authors.
Footnotes stay sealed from your co-author until you both match, and sealed for good if you don’t. Sealed means sealed from other members: as our privacy policy explains, we can read footnotes and messages when we need to review a report, keep Happy Endings safe or meet a legal duty.
6. Publishing to the Nightstand.
In short A tale goes on the Nightstand only if both of you say yes. Once it’s there it stays, readers pay to read it, and we can use it in audio, anthologies and marketing. You won’t be paid, and we will never let it train AI. Either of you can take your name off it later.
The double yes. A finished tale is published to the Nightstand, our paid library, only when both co-authors choose to publish it on the publishing screen. We record both choices. If either of you says no, the tale stays private.
Review. We may read any tale before it appears on the Nightstand, and a person reads every Kink tale before it does. We may decline to publish a tale, or remove one, that breaks these terms or the community guidelines.
The license you grant. When you publish a tale you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable and perpetual license, which we may sublicense to service providers working for us, to:
- host, copy, display and distribute the tale to readers on the Nightstand;
- make and distribute audio versions of the tale, read by people we choose;
- include the tale, or parts of it, in collections and anthologies in any format;
- quote, excerpt and adapt short parts of the tale, with its title and your pen name, to promote Happy Endings and the Nightstand on our own channels, social media (such as Instagram), advertising and press;
- format, edit lightly for typos and length in promotion, and translate the tale for these uses, without changing its meaning.
This license does not let us use the tale to train, fine-tune or evaluate any artificial intelligence or machine-learning model, or allow anyone else to. It does not transfer your copyright: you remain free to publish your own chapters elsewhere.
No payment. Publishing is unpaid. Readers pay us for access to the Nightstand; you are not entitled to any share of that, to royalties or to any fee for the uses above. Perks you earn by publishing, such as a free week of the Nightstand or extra submissions, have no cash value.
Published stays published. Because a published tale belongs to two people and its readers, you can’t unpublish it. You can, at any time, take your pen name off a published tale; it will then be credited to “a former author”, and this can’t be undone. If a published tale contains details that identify you or anyone else, tell us and we will remove them. We may still remove any tale that breaks these terms or the law.
7. Typed by you.
In short Every word is yours, typed at the keyboard. No AI-written words, no bots, no pasting.
Every chapter, submission, footnote and message must be written by you, typed by you, on Happy Endings. You may not post text generated in whole or in part by an artificial intelligence tool, written by someone else, or pasted in from elsewhere, and you may not use bots, scripts or automated accounts. Pasting is switched off in writing boxes. To keep Happy Endings human, we record how text is entered (for example, whether it was typed or pasted and its timing), as our privacy policy explains. We don’t promise to catch every breach. Members can report suspected machine writing with “Feels like a bot?”, and a person reviews every report. We may remove words or accounts that break this section.
8. Their words are theirs.
In short What someone writes for you is for your eyes only.
Don’t copy, screenshot, record, share, publish or sell another member’s words, photos or messages outside Happy Endings without their written permission, except as the law allows or to report a problem to us or the authorities.
9. The rules.
In short Be kind. Be filthy if you like. Never be cruel. The full rules are in the community guidelines.
Explicit writing between consenting adult characters is welcome in Lust and Kink tales and in private between members who both want it. Sexual images are not, ever. Our community guidelines set out what is allowed in each tale type and are part of these terms. In particular, you may not:
- write anything sexual involving a person under 18, real or fictional, including characters described or presented as young, school settings and characters aged up from source material;
- write sexual content involving non-consent, incest, animals or real, identifiable people;
- post, send or ask for nude or sexual images, or any image of a minor;
- offer, ask for or arrange sex or companionship for money or gifts, including sugar arrangements and escorting, or advertise anything;
- ask another member for money, gifts, investments or financial details;
- harass, threaten, stalk, shame or bully anyone, or post hate against anyone for who they are;
- share anyone’s personal information, including your co-author’s real name, without their permission;
- impersonate anyone or misrepresent your identity or age;
- break any law, or help anyone else to, or use Happy Endings for any illegal purpose;
- interfere with Happy Endings, scrape it, get around our limits or security, or access it by any automated means.
We report apparent child sexual abuse material and the enticement of minors to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and to law enforcement.
10. Photos.
In short Your author photo stays hidden until you and your co-author both choose to swap. Keep it clothed and keep it you.
Your verification selfie is your author photo unless you choose another. Other members see only your initial until you and a co-author both choose to swap author photos. A published tale never shows a photo. Any photo you upload must be of you alone, clothed and not sexual, and must not show anyone under 18. We check uploads automatically and may refuse or remove any photo. You can report a photo, and a reported photo is hidden pending review. Reports of intimate images shared without consent are handled as our safety page sets out, and we remove such images within 48 hours of a valid request.
11. Safety.
In short We check that you’re a real adult. We don’t check anyone’s past. Look after yourself, especially when you meet.
HAPPY ENDINGS DOES NOT CONDUCT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND SCREENINGS OF ITS MEMBERS. OUR ID CHECK CONFIRMS THAT A MEMBER IS A REAL PERSON AND AN ADULT; IT IS NOT A BACKGROUND CHECK AND DOES NOT TELL YOU WHO SOMEONE IS OR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE.
You alone are responsible for your dealings with other members, online and off. Read our safety page before you meet anyone, meet in public, tell a friend where you’ll be and never send money to someone you haven’t met. We are not responsible for the conduct of any member, but we may act on conduct off Happy Endings, including at a meeting, when it is reported to us and affects the safety of our members. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and nobody owes anybody a date, a chapter or anything else.
12. Reports, removals and appeals.
In short Tell us when something’s wrong. A person reads every report and every removal, and you can appeal.
You can report a member, a chapter, a message, a footnote or a photo from where you see it. A person reviews every report. We may remove content, limit features, suspend or close an account, or keep information as evidence, if we reasonably believe someone has broken these terms, the law or put anyone at risk. We may act without notice where safety or the law requires. Automated tools may flag content, but no account is closed without a person’s review.
If we act against your account or content, we will tell you why unless the law or safety prevents it. You can appeal within six months by writing to ; a different person will review it. Reporting someone you know has done nothing wrong is itself a breach of these terms.
13. Plans and billing.
In short Writing and dating are free. Voyeur, monthly or yearly, opens the Nightstand and renews until you cancel. We remind you before every yearly renewal.
Free. Creating an account, writing, sending submissions and chatting are free. Some features may be limited, as shown in the app.
Plans. Voyeur, billed monthly or yearly, gives you access to the Nightstand for as long as the plan is active. The price, billing period and any taxes are shown before you buy.
Automatic renewal. Your plan renews automatically at the end of each billing period, and we will charge your payment method the then-current price until you cancel. You agree to this separately when you buy. We will email a confirmation with these terms and how to cancel, a reminder before each yearly renewal and once a year for monthly plans, and at least 30 days’ notice of any price change, which applies from your next renewal.
Bundles. We may sell one-time bundles of advances, such as extra submissions. A bundle is not a subscription, expires as shown when you buy it and has no cash value.
Payment. Payments are handled by our payment processor, named at checkout, whose name may appear on your card statement. You authorize us and our processor to charge your payment method. If a payment fails we may pause your plan. If you dispute a charge with your bank instead of contacting us, we may close the plan while the dispute is open.
14. Cancelling and refunds.
In short Cancel in one click whenever you like. Change your mind within three business days and get everything back. If we end your plan through no fault of yours, you get the unused part back.
Cancel any time. You can cancel in your account settings in a few clicks, or by emailing . Your plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for, then stops. Deleting your account cancels your plan.
Three-day right to cancel. You may cancel a new plan, for any reason, by midnight of the third business day after you buy it and receive a full refund within 10 days. Cancel in your settings or by email to . Business days exclude Sundays and legal holidays.
Fair refunds. We refund the unused part of your plan, pro rata, if we close your account for any reason other than your breach of these terms, if we stop offering the Nightstand or remove a substantial part of what your plan includes and you cancel within 30 days of being told or if you die or become unable to use Happy Endings because of a disability (proof may be requested). Otherwise payments are not refundable, except where the law requires.
15. Leaving Happy Endings.
In short Delete your account in settings whenever you like. Your private writing goes. Published tales stay, with your name off them.
You can delete your account at any time in your settings, or by emailing Fluffer at . When you do, we delete your profile, your private chapters and your messages as our privacy policy describes. Tales you published stay on the Nightstand, credited to “a former author”. A private, unfinished tale is frozen when you leave: your co-author can still read it, and it is never continued or published. We keep some records for the periods our privacy policy sets out, for example to meet legal duties and to stop removed members from returning.
Sections 4 (for copies we may keep), 6, 8 and 16 to 26 survive the end of this agreement.
16. Privacy.
In short We don’t sell your data, we don’t run ads and we never let your words train AI. The privacy policy has the detail.
Our privacy policy explains what we collect, including your identity check, your preferences and how you type, why, who we share it with and your rights. We do not sell personal information or use it for advertising.
17. Copyright complaints.
In short If someone’s posted your work, tell our copyright agent.
We respond to notices of claimed copyright infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Send notices to our designated agent: Copyright Agent, Brown Paper Press LLC, . Our agent’s postal address is listed in the US Copyright Office’s directory of designated agents. A notice must include your signature, the work you say is infringed, where the material is on Happy Endings, your contact details, a statement of good-faith belief that the use is not authorized and a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and you are authorized to act. If your content is removed, you may send a counter-notice as the Act allows. We close the accounts of repeat infringers.
18. No scraping, no AI training.
In short Nobody, including us, trains AI on Happy Endings.
No one may scrape, crawl, copy or harvest content from Happy Endings, or use any content from it to train, fine-tune or evaluate artificial intelligence or machine-learning models, except search engines indexing public pages under our robots file. We don’t use your words for this either.
19. Our service.
Happy Endings, its name, logomark, design, software and our own content belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-transferable, revocable license to use Happy Endings under these terms. We may change, add or remove features, and we will tell you in advance of any change that materially reduces what a paid plan includes. Happy Endings may sometimes be unavailable.
20. Disclaimers.
HAPPY ENDINGS IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON’T PROMISE THAT YOU WILL FIND A CO-AUTHOR, A DATE OR A HAPPY ENDING, THAT HAPPY ENDINGS WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ANY MEMBER IS WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE BEYOND WHAT OUR ID CHECK CONFIRMS. TALES ARE FICTION WRITTEN BY MEMBERS, AND THEY DON’T REFLECT OUR VIEWS.
21. Limit of liability.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, DATA OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM HAPPY ENDINGS OR THESE TERMS, OR FOR THE CONDUCT OF ANY MEMBER ON OR OFF HAPPY ENDINGS. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF $100 OR WHAT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE. NOTHING IN THESE TERMS LIMITS LIABILITY FOR FRAUD, GROSS NEGLIGENCE, WILLFUL MISCONDUCT, DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY CAUSED BY OUR NEGLIGENCE, OR ANYTHING ELSE THE LAW DOES NOT ALLOW TO BE LIMITED.
22. Indemnity.
You agree to defend and compensate us, and our members, managers and service providers, for claims, losses and reasonable legal costs arising from your words, your breach of these terms or your conduct toward other members, except to the extent caused by our own fault.
23. Disputes.
In short Talk to us first. If that fails, disputes go to individual arbitration, small claims court is always open and you have 31 days to opt out.
Talk first. Before starting any claim, you and we agree to try to resolve it informally. Send a written description of the dispute and what you want to ; we will do the same to the email on your account. If it isn’t resolved within 60 days, either side may begin arbitration.
Arbitration. You and we agree that any dispute arising from these terms or Happy Endings will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, except that either side may bring an individual claim in small claims court, and either side may ask a court to stop infringement of intellectual property. The arbitrator decides all questions, including whether a dispute is arbitrable, except the class waiver below. Hearings may be held by video or in your home county. For claims of $10,000 or less we will pay the filing and arbitrator fees beyond what you would pay to file in court. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this section.
Class waiver. YOU AND WE MAY BRING CLAIMS ONLY IN AN INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY CLASS, COLLECTIVE OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION. If this waiver is found unenforceable for a claim, that claim goes to court, not to class arbitration.
Sexual assault and harassment. Nothing in this section requires you to arbitrate a sexual assault or sexual harassment dispute that federal law (the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act) lets you bring in court.
Opting out. You may opt out of this section within 31 days of first accepting these terms by emailing with your name, the email on your account and a statement that you opt out of arbitration. Opting out doesn’t affect anything else in these terms. If we make a material change to this section, you will have 31 days from notice to opt out of the change.
Law and courts. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and by federal law. Any claim not subject to arbitration will be brought only in the state or federal courts located in Washington State, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction, except that you may bring a claim in small claims court where you live. Any claim must be brought within one year of arising, unless the law requires a longer period.
24. Changes to these terms.
We may update these terms. We will post the new version with its effective date and, for changes that materially affect your rights, tell you by email or in the app at least 30 days before they take effect. If you keep using Happy Endings after that, you accept them; if you don’t agree, you can delete your account and, for paid plans, receive a pro rata refund for the unused period. Changes to section 23 and to the liability limit need your acceptance in the app.
25. The rest of the legal bits.
These terms, with the documents named in section 1, are the whole agreement between you and us about Happy Endings. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Our not enforcing a term is not a waiver. You may not transfer these terms; we may transfer them to a company that takes over Happy Endings, and published tale licenses go with it. We are not liable for delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control. Notices to you may be sent to your account email or shown in the app.
26. State notices and contact.
California. Under California Civil Code section 1789.3, California members may contact the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs in writing at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N 112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by phone at (916) 445-1254 or (800) 952-5210.
New York. New York members may place their plan on hold for up to one year and receive the Dating Service Consumer Bill of Rights, linked from our safety page.
Safety notices. The safety tips required by state dating laws are on our safety page, linked from every page and shown when you join.
